The Probus Clubs are for retired and partially retired professional and business men and women. They are non-political and non-sectarian. Meetings and social functions are held with the object of promoting fellowship amongst members.
The Probus Club as we know it was started in 1966 by the Rotary Club of Caterham. They spread world wide in the 1970's.
In January 1983 Cambridge and South Cambridgeshire Rotary Clubs proposed that there should be a Cambridge Probus Club. An inaugural meeting was held at the Gonville Hotel in February 1983. In May 1985 when the membership had grown to over 70 it was decided that the club should be split into two clubs, Granta Probus Club and Cambridge Probus Club. The membership of the Cambridge Probus Club is now over 50 members.
The Club meets on the last Thursday of each month at Girton College, except in July and August, when Girton College is not available. The meetings are then held at the Arundel Hotel.

The Club assembles in Girton College bar at 12.00 noon and has lunch at 12.30 in the dining hall. The college provides a very good lunch, much to the taste of most members, for example steak and kidney pie followed by apple crumble and custard. After lunch we have a talk by an invited speaker. We have been fortunate in Cambridge to have had a wide variety of interesting speakers.
The Club has a ladies' lunch each year and an annual dinner. There is also a social programme, with coffee mornings at a public house, organised walks in the Cambridgeshire countryside and also occasional outings to the theatre and places of interest.

Girton College Cambridge Cambridge is an interesting and historic city. For further information the following internet sites are worth a visit:
This latter site also contains details of both Cambridge and Granta Probus Clubs.
